Best Ebook Formats: EPUB vs PDF vs MOBI
Choosing the wrong e book format can get your book rejected before a single person reads it. If you're publishing for the first time, knowing the difference between EPUB, PDF, and MOBI will save you a lot of headaches.
Let's break each one down.
EPUB: Start here

EPUB is the format most e book stores actually want. Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes and Noble, Google Play – they all run on EPUB.
The text adjusts to fit whatever screen the reader is on. Bigger font, smaller phone, different device -- it handles all of it automatically. That's what makes it so practical.
If you only learn one format, make it this one.
MOBI: Mostly history now
MOBI was Amazon's Kindle format for years. But Amazon moved to EPUB for KDP uploads in 2022, so MOBI is largely phased out.

You might still see it mentioned in older publishing guides. Just know it's not something you need to build around anymore.
PDF: Useful, but in the right place
A PDF looks identical on every device. That sounds ideal until someone opens yours on a phone and the text is too small to read comfortably.
PDFs are great for print layout, workbooks, or review copies where the design needs to stay fixed. For standard publishing though, most stores won't accept a PDF as your main file.

Use it for sharing and previewing. Not for submitting.
What you actually need
For most first-time indie authors, it comes down to this:
- EPUB for every major store
- EPUB for Amazon KDP too, they handle the conversion
- PDF only for print layouts or sending review copies
That's the whole picture. You don't need to become a technical expert to get this right.
